Maggie’s indoor season has been a bit of a struggle for her. After hitting a new PR of 40’ 4.5” in early December, she hadn’t been able to break 40ft again all indoor season. Despite limited practices due to playing basketball this winter, she kept the faith that we would figure it out and kept grinding. The last practice before AAU Nationals, there was finally that technical breakthrough we’ve been working towards for a few years now. Fortunately, that form (mostly*) carried over into the AAU Indoor Nationals where she uncorked a massive 3ft PR (43’ 7.5”) on her first throw! That mark and the remainder of her 5 measured throws [ 43' 7.5"  39' 5.5"  41' 5"  39' 10.25"  39' 7.5"  FOUL ] were all good enough to defend her indoor national title. Congrats Maggie!

*Note: Just to give you an idea of how good she was throwing on Wednesday, her National Championship, 3ft PR throw wasn’t as good technically as what I saw at the last practice. Excited to see what she’s able to do during the outdoor season.

A couple of our throwers took part in the MITS State Meet this weekend. Addison followed up her PR in discus two weekends ago with her 2nd trip over 100ft. Teegan had a rough day in shot on Saturday but did better today in discus. His best on 146’ 10” was good for 4th place. The impact of a long high school basketball season (with minimal lifting and throws practices) showed. No doubt his results will improve once he’s practicing regularly and gets back in the weight room!

Teegan     – 44’ 5.5” shot (18th)

               – 146’ 10” discus (4th)

Addison    – 101’ 2” discus (16th)

Here’s a look at some of our MPTC alumni results from the college ranks. Clayre (Sr) hit a new PR in weight in her final collegiate indoor meet, scoring two points for her team. Hard to believe that this is her last season. ☹   Jordyn (Freshman) competed in her first Horizon League Indoor Championship where she added a foot to her PR in the weight. Jake (RS-Freshman) got the nod to compete in his first Big Ten Indoor Championship. He had a consistent series of throws which included his 3rd furthest throw all time.

The highlight of the weekend for me was getting to watch Val (Jr) and Jake compete at the Big Ten Indoor Championships. As I mentioned last week, it was a last “minute” decision to pull Val’s redshirt. She tied her PR of 20.03m last weekend at GVSU. That mark had her seeded #16 in the weight which put her in the 1st flight (and meant she had a lot of work to do to make finals, top 9). While she wouldn’t be able to see and respond to what the top flight throwers were doing, being in the 1st flight did give her a opportunity to hit a big mark and apply pressure on the top seeds before they even got to start throwing. Val wasted no time in doing just that. Her first throw was an absolute bomb! Her mark of 20.85m (68’ 5”) was a 0.82m PR. She qualified for finals in 5th place. While she couldn’t improve from there, she had 2 more throws over her old PR and held on for 5th (earning 4 points for the Spartans). Val performs well at this meet. This was her 3rd year in a row of hitting a PR at the Big Ten Indoor Championship and her 2nd year on the podium (moving up 3 spots from last year’s 8th place finish). Val’s mark moved her up to #10 in the Big Ten (30th nationally in the NCAA div. 1).
