It was a relatively light weekend for our MPTC alumni on the collegiate circuit. What wasn’t light was Jake banging out a new PR in weight. He made the most of his first road trip with the team by adding 40cm to his PR (exceeding 62ft for the first time).

Badger’s Windy City Invite – 9-10Feb’24:

Jake Steslicki    – 62’ 0.25” (18.90m) – 17th place weight - PR

GVSU Big Meet (Friday) – 9Feb’24:

Clayre Shaver – 48’ 1.75” (14.67m) – 23rd place weight

                     – 37’ 4” (11.38m) – 25th place shot

Spire Indoor Games 2024 – 10Feb’24:

Jordyn Thompson – 34’ 2” (10.41m) – 54th place weight

It was a long, busy day at the LAB today. We had 6 throwers in action including the first of my Six Mile TC throwers to take part in a meet (only took me a year and a half of cajoling).  I was busy hopping between shot and discus and managed to not miss a single meet throw (surprisingly, I only missed a few warm-ups).

I was very happy with their performances. 5 PRs plus 2 seasonal bests in 11 events! Highlight of the meet for me was Donovan crushing his previous PRs (4.5ft PR in shot, 13ft PR in discus). You know you’ve had one of those days when you measure your PRs in feet and don’t bother with the inches! Zoe (+8.75”), Addison (+6.75”) and Lily (just under 4ft) all had PRs in shot. Addison exceeded her PR in discus; however, given that the official missed her completely falling out of the circle (distracted watching the discus hook inside the right sector line?), I’m just going to call it a seasonal best. Maggie had another strong performance (over 90ft in discus and over 39ft in shot) despite still recovering from a cold. Teegan, despite limited practices due to playing varsity basketball this winter, had a seasonal best in discus which should easily qualify him for the MITS State meet. He had already punched his ticket in shot put.

The indoor season is rapidly drawing to a close. Hard to believe we only have 2 more weekends before the state meet.

Maggie Kandt               – 39’ 3” – 1st place MS 6lb shot

                                     – 92’ 10” – 16th place discus (high school division)

Zoe Ghanbari                 – 35’ 5.75” – 2nd place MS 6lb shot - PR

Addison Schwarzenberg – 29’ 10” – 18th place shot – PR

                                    – 98’ 1” – 12th place discus – SR*

Lily Martin                     26’ 3” – 32nd place shot – PR

                                    – 77’ 10” – 28th place discus

Teegan Simmons           – 48’ 4.5” – 3rd place shot

                                    – 148’ 0” – 2nd place discus - SR

Donovan Brogdon         – 37’ 7” – 21st place shot – PR

                                    – 115’ 4” – 20th place discus – PR

Updated: Feb 6, 2024

A couple of updates wrt upcoming practices and meets.

Practices:

The M/W practices at the dome run through Feb. 28th. Macomb has resumed holding open track nights on Wednesdays. Through the end of February, evening practices will generally be held at EMU on Mondays and at Macomb on Wednesdays. The online schedule reflects all of this. Just want to remind everyone to pay close attention dates and locations.

I will on vacation the first 2 full weeks of March. Macomb will be holding a few open gym nights during that period if you are interested in practicing on your own (Mar. 4th, 11th, 13th & 18th). I will likely be there on the 18th trying to get ready for the USATF Masters Indoor National Championship the following weekend. If you come on the 18th, understand my focus will be on coaching myself and knocking the vacation rust off. :-)

Meets:

Feb 10th: LAB (shot & discus) --> I likely be at the AAU 14U meet.

Feb 10th: AAU 14U National Championship @ EMU

Feb 11th: Illinois USATF Open & Masters Championship

Feb 17th: LAB (shot only)

Feb 24th: MITS State Meet (shot)

Feb 25th: MITS State Meet (discus & weight)

Mar. 21 - Mar24th: USATF Masters Indoor National Championship

If you are planning to attend these meets, please let me know. If there are enough attending, I will make every effort to join you. Thanks.

Outdoor Practices:

Post the Masters Indoor Nationals and once the weather improves, I will start thinking about setting up outdoor practices.

I think that covers it. Reach out if you have any questions.
