With the AAU District meet getting cancelled unexpectedly, I decided to join Jennifer Heston at the USATF Michigan Open/Masters Outdoor Championships. Jennifer stole the show. She competed in 6 throwing events, setting PRs in 5 of 6 events (6 for 6 if you track indoor versus outdoor PRs in shot)! She placed 1st in 5 of 6 events in the women’s 50-54 division and added a 1st (and yet another PR) in the throws pentathlon!! As for me, it was good to get some throws in but my numbers left much to be desired (and my hammer technique was embarrassing). Time to get back to work.

Jennifer – 25’ 3.5” – 1st place shot (outdoor PR)

51’ 0” – 2nd place javelin – PR

78’ 0” – 1st place discus – PR

89’ 10” – 1st place hammer – PR

31’ 2” – 1st place weight (16lb) – PR

1640 pts – 1st place throws pentathlon – PR

20’ 7.25” – 1st place super weight (25lb) – PR

Coach Toby – 122’ 9” – 1st place discus

37’ 4” – 1st place shot - SR

– 105’ 8” – 1st place hammer

Here's a copy of the email I received from Karen Hall. As I understand it, Renaissance High School is no longer an option so the EITI Design Invitational scheduled for June 17th is also impacted. Not sure if they will be able to secure a new venue in time. Per the note from Karen, They will be moving the regional meet (to be announced soon).

"MICHIGAN AAU Track & Field Family,

I am sure many of you have heard rumors and others are speculating regarding the District Qualifier that is scheduled for this weekend. However please consider this the official email that due to unforeseen circumstances with the location and the facility which caused a safety and security issue with hosting the event, the Michigan District Qualifier is cancelled for June 10-11, 2023. All athletes will be advanced to the regional qualifier and are able to register for regionals starting today. Regionals will take place at an alternate location on June 29 – July 2, 2023. That location will be announced next week once all facility permits are finalized. Anyone who has paid for districts will receive a refund. We are so sorry for the inconvenience, however this matter was out of our control.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

In the mean time, I am looking at options for other meets to help get prepared for the Regional Meet. Right now, I'm planning to be at the 3 bolded meets. I think our main focus for getting prepped for Regionals should be the Meijers State Games on the 24th of June.

  • Sat Jun 17th EITI Design Invite?? - not sure if they'll be able to secure a new location in time to host this meet

  • Sat Jun 17th Hammerman USA in Aurora, IL (S/D/J/H) - great meets but a long drive (5+ hours)

  • Wed Jun 21st Divine Child Summer Series (S/D) - sign up at meet

  • Sat Jun 24th Meijer State Games at East Kentwood HS (S/D/J/H)

  • Sat Jun 24th Blazers Invite @ Albion College (S/D/J) - sign up via CoachO.com

  • Wed Jun 28th Divine Child Summer Series (S/D) - sign up at meet

Maggie and I kicked off the summer season at the Coach P Summer Games in Toledo over the Memorial Day weekend. To spice things up, we had a little side bet at discus. Her throw of 97’ 9” was a new PR and cost me a Kona Ice! I better step up my throwing or not give her so many feet next time!!

Maggie – 97’ 9” – 1st place discus – PR

– 36’ 5.25” – 1st place shot

– 90’ 2” – 1st place 400g turbo javelin

Coach Toby – 124’ 4” – 2nd place discus

– 36’ 11.25” – 2nd place shot
