Here's some of the more pertinent information for this weekend's AAU Regional meet. You can find the complete handout at https://coachoregistration.com/track/info/mi_aaunq12/2024/aaureg12qu2401/info.pdf.

Parking: There is a lot on the NE side of Renaissance High School (off Outer Drive) that will put you closest to the the throwing circles. If you park in the south lot by the main entrance, you'll have a long walk to the back. I will be picking up the bib numbers on Friday when I go over to watch a couple of our multi-eventers throw. There is a $5 gate fee for spectators. The athletes will need the bib to enter the track area.

I'll be setting up a canopy with our club name on it to serve as a gathering place (ideally on the small rise in the trees between shot and discus). I'll have the bibs numbers there. Bring camp chairs and umbrellas. You'll likely want to bring a cooler with water/cold drinks and food. There will be concessions inside the track at the south end but lines are often very long. In recent years we've had a food truck out back, Bottom-line, be prepared for a long day outside in the sun, heat and potentially rain. Saturday in particular can take a long time as there are more age groups throwing.

I've included a copy of the posted schedule below. Implement inspection is typically scheduled for 8:30am (between shot and discus). Throwing starts at 9:00 and then moves on a rolling schedule. They generally try to follow the posted age group order but will switch things up due to available groups. Please pay attention when your group is getting close so that you are ready for warm-up throws. As you can see they will have all three throwing events going at the same time. Once it starts, I'll be running around trying to support everyone as best I can. Final comment, they never run on time and at times it can be a bit disorganized so please be patient. Control what you can control and be ready to compete when your name is called.

The main goal tomorrow is top-5 finishes to qualify for the National Meet in August (and of course new PRs)!

If you run into any issues or have any questions, you can reach me at 734-649-7875.

Looking forward to seeing everyone compete this weekend!

Surprisingly, we didn’t have too many of our throwers in action this weekend (even though we have the AAU regional meet coming up this weekend).  Maggie and I took part in the Meijer State games of Michigan with Zoe in action at the Blazers Invitational. Maggie had a great meet, setting new PRs in discus and hammer along with a seasonal best in shot put. I finally broke out of my slump in shot going over 39ft three times (40ft still alludes me). Unlike Wednesday night, I didn’t leave my best discus throw in warm-ups and opened the competition with my 3rd best throw all-time since turning 55. Hammer was a mess technically but was only a couple feet off my PR set two weekends ago.

Zoe was the only one that trains with us from Waza that threw at the Blazers Invitational. She easily took first in shot with her 2nd best throw all-time.

Meijer State Games of Michigan (East Kentwood HS) – 22Jun’24:

Maggie         – 87’ 2” – 1st place 12-13yr 600g javelin

                   – 42’ 3” – 1st place 12-13yr shot

                   – 110’ 1” – 1st place 12-13yr discus – PR

                   – 107’ 10” – 1st place 12-13yr hammer – PR

*** MPTC Age Group Record ***

Coach Toby  – 39’ 7” – 1st place 55-59 shot - SR

                   – 127’ 4” – 1st place 55-59 discus - SR

                   – 115’ 6” – 1st place 55-59 hammer

Blazers Invitational (Albion College) – 22Jun’24:

Zoe             – 36’ 7” - 1st place 13-14 shot

A few of us braved the “Heat Dome” generated hot and humid weather to get a few competition throws in at Divine Child’s first Summer Series Meet of the season. There were no officials for the throws tonight so Ken, Elizabeth and I ended up stepping in to run the show. The one benefit of our being in charge was the decision to let everyone have 6 throws.

Maggie and Emma took advantage of the extra throws to hit new PRs in discus. Addison started to show more consistency that will lead to new PRs for her as well. Maggie had a particularly good series with 5 of 6 throws over 104ft. Post-collegiate and MPTC alum Joe Ghafari got his first throws in of the summer as he prepares for a meet in Lebanon later this summer. I unfortunately left my best two throws in warm-ups. Hopefully I’ll improve on Saturday in Grand Rapids.

Maggie         – 109’ 8” – discus – PR

                    – 41’ 6” – shot

Emma           – 31’ 5.5” – shot

                    – 108’ 3” – discus – PR

Addison        – 30’ 5.5” – shot

                    – 100’ 2” – place

Joe Ghafari   – 142’ 10” – 2kg discus

Coach Toby  – 115’ 6” – 1.5kg discus
