It was a normal AAU Region 12 meet including the typical warts of delays, changes of event schedule, inconsistencies (4 throws vs 6 throws) and long days. We were back at Renaissance HS this year (no last-minute change of venue to Ypsilanti Community HS) and the multi-events were conducted (last year they got canceled due to bad air quality from the Canadian fires). Over the 4 days, we even got to experience a wide variety of weather (sometimes on the same day). Pouring rain Saturday morning gave way to hot, humid temperatures in the afternoon. Sunday was a bit cool (low-60’s in the morning) but gave way to a nice sunny afternoon with a high of 70 deg. Everyone did well and were ready to perform when finally called on.
Highlights from the multi-events (days 1-2) include Teegan, Zoe and Aria winning their respective age groups. Teegan had a long-awaited new PR in discus which portends to bigger things to come this summer. Aria had a huge PR in shot put (adding 4.5 feet) and Zoe had another strong showing in shot as well.
Highlights from day 3 include a double PRs from Addison (shot & jav), Emma (discus & jav) and Torran (shot & jav). Torran’s first throw at javelin put his older brother on notice (for a few minutes at least 😊)! We had 9 regional champions. Teegan & Maggie both went 3 for 3. Joe (shot), Torran (jav) and Addison (discus) were also regional champs. Despite AAU making qualification for the JO more difficult (top 5 vs top 6 last year), our older club throwers qualified in 17 of 18 events. The only miss came in an event where the person hit a 13ft PR! Great job!
Highlights from day 4 include 3 PRs from Gabriel. We also had 3 regional champions (Gabriel in shot & javelin and Aria in shot). Gabriel won the javelin with a big 6th round come-from-behind toss! Most importantly, both of our younger club throwers placed in the top 5 (none lower than 2nd) which qualifies them for the AAU National Junior Olympics in Greensboro, NC.
Now it’s time to get back to work.
